Trade with the Ottoman Empire introduced many new and exotic artifacts to western Europe. In the sixteenth century, Dutch and English consumers became obsessed with importing and breeding tulips. Prized bulbs that combined coveted colors and perfectly shaped petals were sold at outrageous prices – sometimes more than the cost of a private home in Amsterdam. Tulips were used as decoration on housewares like this dish for many years afterwards.
